synopsis

In his final moments, an old man relives a memory about a former high school acquaintance, Kait, who picks him up from the side of the road while driving to college. Once a young man with no destination, a chance encounter on Highway 1 reunites the two for a road trip from California to Arizona. One ride. Two people who barely know each other find a deep connection on the road. Their spontaneous road trip together begins to uncover a sense of self for Kait and the young man – and a love that stays with him for the rest of his life.

DIRECTOR STATEMENT

Put it this way, it was a rocky time. Uncertainty and a lot of confusion. A friend came and brought me back to life. Bonnie immortalizes Clyde, a confirmation of himself. I had to channel the chaos in my mind. I honed in on the idea that through deep friendship and connection, you can awaken something deep within. The movement from darkness to light. Highway represents that shift.

It’s a combination of my own fears of dying, falling in love, and a road trip. Highway is realism, spontaneity, rejection of rigid structures, the hand-held camera, shooting in the streets, improvisation, and the search for the natural.

I’ve learned something out on the road. This film marks the end of one long chapter in my life and the beginning of another.
